U. of MD Pitching Ace Comes from Poolesville
The News (Frederick, MD) April 26, 1934

A good arm and of course a little gray matter about the ears are the things a young fellow needs to be a pitcher which brings to mind the case of Ralph Ruble, University of Maryland's star twirler who offers rather stark proof of the value of one good arm. Ralph has only one arm which is of real use to him either on a baseball field or in the ordinary walks of life. It is his right arm, a perfectly normal member as some of the enemy batsmen who have fanned trying to lay on Ruble's shoots will attest.

Ruble's left arm is withered at the wrist. The Maryland finger was born with the handicap. When Ralph reached that age when all kids began tossing about a baseball, he drew the usual sympathy heaped on a little fellow who wasn't expected to be able to indulge in much of any kind of athletics.

The Terp ace soon showed his friends that their sympathy was wasted. He developed his right arm and now is Coach Burton Shipley's ace pitcher at College Park. He is from Poolesville, Montgomery county and is an honor student.

Here's a brief summary of what Ralph has accomplished this season; Won three games, all by the shutout route, trounced the University of Virginia twice, 3-0 (10 innings) and 8-0 and Washington and Lee University 9-0, pitched a total of 28 scoreless innings, allowed only 14 hits, struck out 22 batsmen and accumulated an individual batting average of .367.

Ruble furnishes the big leverage from his bat with his good pitching arm. Bucky Buschier, veteran outfielder of the Maryland Nine, boasts the fattest average of the regulars on the team. Buscher is clouting the ball at a .333 clip, quite a few points behind Ruble's figure!
