DOROTHY GROSSMANN MATTES

Dorothy M. Mattes, 92, of Kiel, died Saturday morning, March 8, 2003, at Care Partners Assisted Living in Kiel.

She was born April 16, 1910, in Two Rivers, daughter of the late Edwin S. and Ella Wilke Mueller. Dorothy attended Kiel High School and graduated from Lincoln
High School, Manitowoc, and the Manitowoc County Teachers College. She taught at Manitowoc County rural schools for six years. On June 7, 1934, she married Rev. Walter Grossmann. They served churches of the Reformed Church in the United States at Hasmer, S.D., and Shafter, Calif. Rev. Grossmann preceded her in death in 1956.
On Aug. 23, 1958, she married Rudolph Mattes, and the couple lived in the town of Schleswig. Rudolph preceded her in death in 1993. Dorothy was a member of the Rockville Merry-Go-Round and the Kiel Senior Center. She enjoyed knitting and sewing.

Survivors include her son, Rev. Robert (Pauline) Grossmann of Vermillion, S.D.; daughter-in-law Phyllis Grossmann of Rapid City, S.D.; stepdaughters Mary Mattes Deerhake and husband Rev. Marvin Deerhake of Bicknell, Ind., Barbara Mattes Balz and husband Richad Balz or Kiel. These combined families include 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Peter Grossmannn; a brother, Judge Harold Mueller; and a sister, Alice Mueller Rennick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church, 6524 County C, Manitowoc (near Newton), with the Rev.
Kyle Sorenson officiating.
Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 Sixth St., Kiel, on Monday, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Schleswig cemetery, Kiel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the scholarship fund for ministerial students of the Reformed Church in the United States, in memory of Mrs. Mattes.
The family greatly appreciated the wonderful care and kindness shown to Dorothy during the past few years by Calumet Medical Center Home Care personnel, and especially the entire staff at Care Partners in Kiel.
