James D. Crain, 83, Grand Junction, died April 2, 2011, at home.
No services will be held.
Mr. Crain was a naval aviator.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Pat; one son, James Douglas of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Deborah Lynne Crain of Virginia Beach, VA., and Stephanie Lee Meyers of Jacksonville, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

James D. Crain June 15, 1927 - April 2, 2011 Jim grew up on a ranch in the San Luis Valley near Moffat, Colorado. He left home to join the Merchant Marines in 1944 at the age of 17. After serving in WWII, he attended Western State College from 1947 - 51. Jim was a letterman for the Mountaineers in baseball, basketball, and football, and was with the 1950 football team when they made their storied ride down Monarch Pass on the team bus that lost its brakes. Jim married Pat Sounder in 1950 and after graduation, briefly taught school in Florence, before joining the US Navy. Jim's twenty plus years as a naval aviator included a tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. After retirement from the Navy, Jim and Pat returned to Colorado, where they both taught school in Hudson for 15 years. After retiring from teaching, Jim and Pat moved to Grand Junction. Jim enjoyed golf and worked as a volunteer for the BLM. Jim is survived by his wife, Pat; his daughters, Debbi and Stephanie; a son, Doug; and seven grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
