Holy Roman Emperor. Born Josef von Österreich at Vienna, Austria the son of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and Pfalzgrafin Eleanor Magdalene . He married Amalie Wilhelmine Auguste Herzogin von Brounschweig-Luneburg-Kalenberg in February 1699; they had three children. He saw military service in 1702 with the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession at the siege of Landau. He succeeded his father three years later, and reversed many of the autocratic measures passed by him in an effort to placate opponents during his fractious reign; which included his instigation of a brief campaign against Pope Clement XI at the end of 1709. At the age of 32, he contracted smallpox and died, leaving the throne to his brother.
