Obituary

Charles Griffith Sellman of Aberdeen, a retired employee of C&P Telephone and an active participant in many community endeavors, died Sept. 13 after a lingering illness. He was 84.

He retired from C&P Telephone Company in 1977 after 41 years of service as supervisor of Installation and Repairs. For several years he served as a member of the Community Relations Committee of the C&P Telephone Company. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

A native of Poolesville, he moved to Aberdeen in 1945 with his wife and two daughters. He was a graduate of the Woodbrook School in Baltimore and attended St. John's College in Annapolis.

He served the Aberdeen community in many capacities; president and treasurer of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, president of the Aberdeen Community Planning Council, treasurer of the Aberdeen Beautification Committee, chairman of the Aberdeen Planning and Zoning Commission, and a member of both the Aberdeen Diamond Jubilee in 1967 and the Aberdeen Bicentennial Commission in 1976.

Besides being an avid golfer, he devoted 57 years of service to Lionism. As a charter member of the Monocacy Lions Club, he held many offices before coming to Aberdeen. As a life member of the Aberdeen Lions Club, he served as vice president, and for many years, as a director. At the district level, he served as zone chairman and deputy district governor and as a chairman of many committees. He was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honor in Lionism, in recognition of his humanitarian service as a Lion. He also served as president of the Lions Association of Sight and Hearing and was a member of the executive committee and the board of directors of LASH for more than 10 years.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Ethel Lauterbach Sellman, he is survived by his two daughters, Ethel M. Sellman and Sally A. Sellman; his granddaughter Carrie L. LaBar; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday at the Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Interment with graveside prayers, was in the Monocacy Cemetery in Beallsville.
