Thomas W. Perry Jr., 80, a Washington area lumber and building material dealer, died of respiratory failure March 25 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., where he was spending the winter. He was a resident of Chevy Chase and Gulf Stream, Fla.

Mr. Perry was born in Washington, the son of Thomas W. Perry Sr. and Mary Alice Perry. His father founded T.W. Perry Inc., a lumber and building material supplier, in 1911 in Chevy Chase.

Mr. Perry orchestrated the company's transition from coal to heating oil and managed the lumber and hardware side. The company closed its Silver Spring operation in 1978 and expanded into the homeowner market with the opening of a Gaithersburg store in 1979. On behalf of the company, Mr. Perry received the home center of the year award from Building Material Supply magazine in 1985.
