Civil War Union Army Officer. Began his Civil War service with his enlistment as a Sergeant in Company D, 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 17, 1862. On November 1, 1862 he was promoted to 1st Sergeant, having fought in the Battle of Antietam during the interim. On January 18, 1863 he was advanced to Sergeant Major of the 13th NJ Infantry, replacing the promoted John Cooke. He received a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th's Company G on May 13, 1863, but was never mustered in. That commission became moot on August 13 of that year when he was commissioned and was dully mustered in as Captain and commander of Company A, 33rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He served at the head of his unit in the Western Theater in the Army of the Tennessee, and, the regiment's first taste of combat, was mortally wounded in front of Missionary Ridge during the November 23, 1863 Battle of Chattanooga. His second-in-command, Lieutenant John J. Toffey, was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravely assuming command of the Company and leading it in the subsequent Union assault. Captain Boggs died nearly a month later from his wounds.
