Mr. Morris, who remembered the Shore when the coastline between Long Branch and Belmar consisted of only three or four houses, was born in Hurleytown. He was the son of Robert B. and Rebecca (Youmans) Morris, pioneer residents of this section. His father was born on the same farm and Mr. Morris farmed this land until 1914 when he moved to Glendola.
In 1869 he married Mary E. Barton and the couple had five children. Mrs. Morris died in 1888. In 1891 he married Ella J. Hurley who died in 1923. He was a member of the Glendola Methodist Church and served as a trustee of the church for many years. Mr. Morris was also a charter member of the Glendola grange and a member of the Freedom Council, Jr. O. U. A. M. of Glendola.
For many years he sold vegetables along the Shore from large carry-all wagon drawn by a team of horses and traveling between Asbury Park and Sea Girt. He also kept cattle and chickens and for 25 years maintained an egg and milk route in Belmar. In describing the early Shore he told of a gateway through the Peter White farm which was the only access to the ocean in the Belmar area.
During the past summer he cared for his chickens, which number several hundred and framed three acres of garden produce. He resided here with his daughter, Emma Newberry and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Stultz.
Mr. Morris became ill several weeks ago and during his illness instructed Mrs. Shultz, who is 88, concerning the care of his chickens in case of his death. He often told friends that his motto was, "Work as if to live forever; live as if to die tomorrow."
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Newberry, four sons: R. Frank Morris and Edward L. Morris of Glendale, Charles H. Morris of Avon, and Andrew S. Morris of Galva, Iowa. Funeral services held at the home, Sunday afternoon at 2pm with the Reverend L. G. Atkinson, Belmar, officiating. Internment in the Glendale Cemetery under the direction of C. H. T. Clayton, Adelphia.
