Phyllis I. Barber, age 86, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Clare Bridge of Eden Prairie in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Phyllis Ione Zinn, the daughter of Fred and Velma (Huxtable) Zinn, was born in Newell, Iowa, on October 8, 1923. She lived her youth and received her education at Sulphur Springs, graduating from the Sulphur Springs High School. Phyllis continued her education at the AIB Business College in Des Moines. She played semi-professional basketball in Chicago, Illinois, and in 1942 she was the National Free Throw Champion.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Orval "Stub" Barber on December 1, 1951, in Storm Lake, Iowa. This couple welcomed into their home two children: Cheryl and Jeff. She was employed as an administrative assistant secretary at the Hy-Grade Meat Packing Plant for 19 years. Stub died on June 7, 1998. Phyllis continued to make her home in Storm Lake until moving to Minneapolis in May of 2004 to live with her daughter. Since February, 2009, Phyllis has resided at Clare Bridge of Eden Prairie.

Phyllis enjoyed all sports, but she had a special love for basketball. She was a youth basketball coach for many years in Storm Lake. Phyllis was a very capable person and enjoyed doing all types of carpentry work. She also had many other varied interests which included her love for animals, camping, writing and traveling and keeping very detailed journals of her travels through the United States. Phyllis loved her family very deeply and cherished the times she could spend with them.

Those who will always honor and cherish her memory include: her daughter, Cheryl Barber, and her life partner, Veronica Karlinsky, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her son, Jeff Barber and his wife, Tammi, of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren: Josh, Jaelene, Janet and Jaquelyn; a great grandson, Jeremiah; sister-in-law, Ardyce Zinn of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Bill and Mavis Barber of Mesa, Arizona; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Max.
