James Emil Poggi died on March 17, 2011 in Grass Valley, California. He was 84 years old.

A memorial service will be held at Esterly Hall, 336 Crown Point Circle (Whispering Pines Area) at 2:00PM Saturday, on April 2nd.

His early life experiences with the Catholic Church led to his decision at age 13 to enter St. Joseph's College in Mt. View, CA, a Miner Seminary in preparation for the priesthood. At the age of 21 he was ordained a priest and began 20 years of a life of serving within the Church. He was a parish priest, a teacher at two different Catholic high schools, one being Marin Catholic. Then for 13 years he was a teacher at the Seminary in Mt. View for the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

It was in December of 1970 that he made the difficult decision to leave the priesthood. It was after that that his professional life blossomed into being able to work directly with people, especially with families.

His first job was as a counselor in a job-training program. Then came a long period of working with troubled families in the San Jose-Gilroy- Salinas area. Later he worked for 12 years in Seattle, Washington for a program that did counseling in the home to prevent placement of children. After moving to Grass Valley in 2000, he began working as Program Director at the Lutz Center which then became the Adult Day Care Center. He was never happier than when he was working with people. Never was there a person with a more open, loving ability to listen to the problems of others.

From 1971 to 1978 he was married to Emily Sparks, an ex-Holy Cross Sister, who died of cancer. His second marriage was to Patricia Ann McKenna. At the time of his death they had celebrated over 32 years of marriage. Pat provided him with the family he never had, especially her youngest, Julie Hahs, who was 12 when the married.

The three of them decided to live for 18 month in Mexico following the wedding and journeyed to San Cristobal de las Casas in Southern Mexico. Julie died in 2000 at age 34 as the result of domestic violence. That was an extremely low period in Jim's life because of his deep love for her.

His main priority in his life which never changes was his spiritual practice. Upon moving to Grass Valley he joined the Shambhala Meditation Group, whose teaching stemmed from Tibetan Buddhism.

He also participated in a year-long practice based on Steven Levine's book, "A Year to Live", sponsored by Hospice of the Foothills. That connection sparked his interest in contributing his time to being a Hospice Volunteer.

He is survived by his brother, Jack Poggi of New York City. He is also survived by Pat's children and grandchildren. They are Jeffery Hahs of Portland, Oregon and his sons and wives Brian and Kristin Hahs and David and Christina Hahs; Peggy and Ken Roberts and their daughter Gabrielle of Gold Run, CA; and Andrew and Gail Hahs of Portland, OR, and their sons Scott and Tom.

Please make any memorial contributions to Hospice of the Foothills in Grass Valley.

Arrangements are in the care of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary and Crematory, 250 Race Street in Grass Valley
