"Aunt Ropie" became a surrogate mother for her sister, Mamie Hoag's children: Arlene, Dwelle, and the twins - Meredith and Martha Hoag. Mamie died suddenly in 1914, age 42. The children were ages 4 through 12.

Europa's parents were Jonathan Wood and Eliza Scofield from Easton, NY. Her siblings were Lewis, Charles, Walter, Mamie and Anna Wood. She married a man named David L. Saunders (Sanders), who turned out to have a gambling vice, and she quickly left him. They had no children.

Aunt Ropie lived with the Hoag family at "Buena Vista", 17 Prospect St, Greenwich, NY. The family included Jonathan Elihu Hoag, Mamie's widowed husband- Allan Albert Hoag, and the four children. She may have lived with the family at their prior home in Easton as well.
