John was the son of James Sisemore and Elizabeth Fields. His father died when John was two and his mother about a year later, and he grew up in the home of a cousin in Harlan County, Kentucky and Madison County, Arkansas. He married Eliza Jane Hock in 1842 and ten children were born to this union: George Washington--1844-1921; Thomas Jefferson--1848-1928; Isaiah Butler--1850-1927; William Van--1852-1889; Mary Ann Seamans--1855-1943; Green Gibson--1856-1880; Marcus De Lafayette--1859-1942; Martha Jane Newman--1862-1888; Mary Elizabeth--1863-1864; and Francis Marion 1870-1944.
During the early years of their marriage John operated a stage coach station on the Eureka Springs to Fort Smith Line. It's been reported that some of the stage drivers laughingly referred to it as "Cold Bean Station" since John was noted for serving beans until the pot was completely empty.
