John was the son of James and Anna (Farley) Maher. In 1873, John moved from Illinois to Union County, Dakota Territory. On August 6, 1881, John married Barbara A. Cooper at Emmet; and, the couple had five children, two of whom died in infancy. John practiced veterinary medicine in the area of Beresford, SD. Although he lacked college training, he did obtain a license and was recognized as a good practitioner. He built a veterinary hospital near his home and established a widely-used line of veterinary medicines. In the general election of 1912, John was elected to represent the first district of the South Dakota state legislature in the House of Representatives. John was affiliated with the Republican party. John's last three years were spent in failing health; and, he ended up in a wheelchair. However, he was still able to take an active role in his business affairs before he died in his sleep. During the funeral, all businesses in Beresford were closed by proclamation of the Mayor. He was survived by his wife; his sons, John and Thomas; and his daughter, Madeline Mohr.
