Barbara was the daughter of John and Barbara Cooper. At the age of six, she came to Union County, Dakota Territory. On May 31, 1887, Barbara married John W. Maher at Emmet. The couple became the parents of five children, two of whom died in infancy. Barbara lived in Beresford until spending her last six years with her daughter at Preston and Maquoketa, IA. Barbara died from apoplectic stroke. In addition to her two children, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two sisters, Catherine Conrad and Regina Lass. She was survived by her sons, John B. Maher and Thomas J. Maher; her daughter, Madeline M. Mohr; and her brother, Anthony Cooper.
