Per Calvin's death certificate, his parents were Peter Ewing (variously spelled Ewings or Ewens) and Anna Ewings.

He married Joanna Allen. Their first child was Julia Ann Ewing, born 1830 in Rensselaer County, New York. In 1840 the family was living at Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, New York. In about 1849 Calvin, Joanna and their family moved to Sodus, Wayne, New York. Joanna Allen Ewing's obituary states that she moved to Wayne County in 1849. She would have moved with her husband and family. They appear in the 1850 US Federal Census in Sodus, Wayne Co., US Fed. Census

On February 15, 1888 Calvin passed away at the home of their son Lorenzo Dow Ewing in Alton, Wayne, New York. He passed away after a four-year paralysis due to sun stroke. his wife Joanna was with him when he died.
Calvin was buried February 23, 1888 in the Baptist Rural Cemetery, Sodus Center (also known as the Red Brick Church Cemetery).

Calvin Ewing of Alton, who has lain helpless in bed for over four years as the result of a sunstroke, died last Thursday while conversing with his wife without any indication that the end was so near.

DARIUS ALLEN of the City of Troy in said County, being duly sworn, do depose and say that I am the brother of the said deceased; that said deceased died a natural death at the city of Troy in said county, on the fifth day of March, 1866, without having a last Will and Testament; and that said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of certain personal property in the State of New York, the value thereof does not exceed the sum of seventeen hundred dollars, as I have been informed and believe; that the said deceased left him surviving no widow, children or descendants, father or mother, but brother and sisters as follows

LORENZO D ALLEN of Sodus, Wayne Co, NY; SYLVESTRUS ALLEN of the same p lace, full brothers of said deceased who have filed their ----- of rights to administer said estate and JOANNA EWING, wife of CALVIN EWING of Sodus aforesaid and DARIUS ALLEN of the City of Troy half
brother and half sister of said deceased, only next of kin; and that he was at or immediately previous to his death an inhabitant of the County of Rensselaer. And I pray that Administration on the Estate of the said deceased is
