William McKinley Totman entered Buena Vista College in Jan 1912. He finished 2 years work in 1 and a half years. He graduated I 1918. He worked as a carpenter while attending school after after hours and on Saturdays. Paid his tuition and five dollars a week to his parents for room and board. After graduation he was on the road selling minerals for his brother-in-law Jeff Longworth, until 1922. Moved to Humboldt, Iowa and worked for Farmers Mutual hail Insurance Co. fro 1 year. Then for he worked for Moorman Feed C. as field supervisor for 15 years, then for another Feed Co I the same capacity until 1945. Then he sold all lines of insurance for several years. In 1958 he specialized in Crop hail Insurance. Lived in Marshalltown, Iowa from Dec 1947 until his death from cancer on 8 Oct 1971.

He married Myrtle Iva Redenbaugh on 19 Sept 1919 in Storm Lake, Iowa. They had 3 children: Lorraine and Bonita Jean born in Storm Lake, Iowa and James William born in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

He was divorced in 1946 and married Mary McClurg on 19 Aug 1947 in the Unity Temple in Des Moines, Iowa.
