Erected by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1983, the monument is dedicated to the faithful African Americans who served the Washington family and Mount Vernon, Virginia, 1760 to 1860. The original memorial which was placed in 1929, honors the memory of all those buried in unmarked graves within the area.
