Mary was the oldest of three daughters born to Lewis and Mary Hicks. She was the second wife of David Bigger Caldwell. His first wife, Elizabeth Graham, had died shortly after giving birth to their fourth child. Mary and David were married on April 6, 1847. Together, they had ten children: Alexander, Mary Elizabeth, Henry Ezekial, Louis H., Elizabeth Jane, Hanna Ladema, David Bigger, Naomi, John Berrisford, and Charles A. Caldwell.
