Viole, as she was known to family and friends, was my beloved Godmother. She was married to Jose Ferreira (my Godfather) and had two beautiful daughters Wanda and Marian (my cousins). In addition, they now have the following grandchildren: Carlitos, Charlene, Naara, and Jon Paul. She always made me feel loved and special. Every year she would get the most beautiful and delicious birthday cake for me, it was a tradition. On Christmas, she always made sure that Santa would leave the one toy I wanted the most under her tree. She would regularly buy things that I wanted and I used to think, wow, she reads my mind! (I later found out she would ask my mom if there was anything I wanted!) I even got my very first sewing basket from her! Wherever her daughters were taken, I also went along; to the movies, shopping, parks, resorts, the beach, museums, historic sites, to the circus (when in town), etc. I'll never forget when she invited me to Disney on parade, I had never seen anything like it; it was like magic to me. As an adult, I always found a 2nd mom in her, always a good advice, always a blessing!!! She took care of me so much because she knew that my dad's job didn't allow him much time to take me places, my mom didn't drive, and my parents were older folks who were not really up to going here, there, and everywhere all the time.

She was a hair stylist and had her salon at home. She used to work magic on those women, for they would always come out looking like a million bucks!! She'd always be available to her clients at any time, and it didn't matter how late. We used to help her out, and hear all the gossip.
But my Godmother would never say anything negative about anyone, ever!! She would just listen and, very elegantly, change the conversation. Then, privately, she would caution us girls not to repeat what we hear. She'd say that "the Virgin Mary cries if little girls gossip." Needless to say, we never repeated a thing!!

Whenever someone would do or say something unkind, she would just throw her arms up to heaven and say "There is no love anymore." Us kids would laugh whenever she'd do that, but thinking back, she was just trying to make people realize that we need to love and do good to one another.

I always felt that Viole was a beautiful angel who walked this earth with hidden wings, for she was the kindest most generous person I've ever known. You could never go visit her and leave without eating. Every kid in the neighborhood loved to go to her house. She always made sure that all of us kids were happy and had a good time. She was always helping out those in need, no matter what the need was. She would clean, cook, watch kids, visit the sick. She would even help out if anyone needed help remodeling their homes. She was there for her neighbors, friends, relatives, anybody. When dealing with big tasks she would engage her whole family to help out as well. I have no clue where she got all that energy and time to do all she did, it must have been from God. I think her love for humanity also gave her the strenght, for it is said that love does move mountains....

On February 1997 she complained of pain in her abdomen, and went to the doctor. Some tests were done and she was diagnosed with liver cancer. She went through the awful chemo, lost a lot of weight and her hair fell out. She refused to say the word Cancer, she'd say that she had a "little lump" in her liver and that was it. She was more concerned about everybody else being ok than with herself. I don't think she really knew how sick she was, for the family thought it was best for her not to know. Her brave battle against the little lump lasted 6 months. The chemo had been ineffective. The Cancer had gotten to her brain, she slipped into a coma, and passed away peacefully one sunny afternoon.

I feel so privileged and blessed because she picked me as her Goddaughter. To me she was a very special person who taught me that true love is to give without expecting
anything in return. From her I learned that it is more important to love than to be loved, for true happiness is to make others feel happy and loved!

She's loved and cherished by all who knew her, for her kindness and good nature is truly missed. To know Viole was to love her!! There should be more Violes in this world!

I can say this again, with all the love that I can possibly feel, that I was Christened by an angel in the flesh... For my beloved and unforgettable Godmother was an Angel with hidden wings. I love you Viole, you're always in my heart, just like Mamy and Papy are!
