US Congressman. Born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, he moved to Kentucky, studied law, was admitted to the bar, then moved to West Union, Iowa, in 1854 and commenced the practice of law. He was judge of the circuit court of Fayette County, Iowa, (1855-60) and during the Civil War, served as Captain of Company F, 3rd Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, from June 1861, until his discharge on account of illness. After the war, he moved to Vineland, Missouri, resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1865-66). In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. After his term, he was appointed US Marshal for the eastern district of Missouri, (1869-75) and was also the census enumerator for St. Louis. He died at age 71 in St. Louis, Missouri.
