William J. Heckman, a native-born Dubuquer who started his career here the Illinois Central railroad and eventually advanced to the position of general claims attorney for the railroad in Chicago, died at 7:30 Tuesday morning at his home in Flossmoor, Ill., according to word reaching IC employes here Tuesday afternoon. He was 54 years old.
Mr Heckman was born in Dubuque in 1892. He attended and graduated from the Dubuque Senior High school in1908 and in that same year started work for the Illinois Central railroad here. During World War I he was a lieutenant in the army and after his discharge enrolled at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University in 1920 and returned to the employ of the IC railroad.
He was assigned as claims agent for the road in Paducah, KY., and also had a similar assignment in Fort Dodge. In 1937 he was promoted, going to the Chicago offices of the railroad company as chief clerk of the claims department.
By 1944 he had become general claims attorney for the company at the Chicago office, a position he held till the time of his death.
Funeral arrangments are to be announced at a later time.
