G.D. Hawley was the son of George and Mary (Davis) Hawley. He was a farmer for many years in Union County. He was married to Malissa Weller and was the father of Arthur Weller Hawley and Nettie Hawley (Henderson).

Upon the death of his brother, Pvt. Valorus Hawley, George took his place as eldest son, inheriting a significant parcel of the family homestead at the death of his father. For a time he farmed this land to great success before selling his land to his sister's husband, Carl Johnson (Sr).

At this point George took up residence on a large farm near New Dover, Union County, Ohio (near the old Children's Home). He resided here until the infirmities of old age compelled him to move to Marysville, letting his son Arthur take over the family farm.

George Dell Hawley died of a stroke in Marysville and was buried among family at Oakdale Cemetery in a plot near other prominent Union County families of the time.
