Clara Wailes Darby, of Washington Grove, died at her home Saturday, May 29, 2010.

Born May 6, 1928, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William LeRoy Darby and Laura Allnutt Darby.

She grew up in Front Royal, Va., and moved to the Washington Grove residence in 1937. She was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School and then of Madison College in 1950. She also studied at the Wharton School of Business and at UCLA.

She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and the Alumni Association. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society lnternational -- a professional honorary society of women educators. She was an elementary school teacher for 40 years, first in Arlington, Va., and then in Montgomery Village.

She was an active member of the Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church. She was active in the American Red Cross and the Bloodmobile. After retirement, she continued to volunteer as a classroom helper and to read to students monthly at local elementary schools. She was an avid knitter and donated more than 1,000 hand-knitted caps to newborns at Shady Grove Hospital.

She is survived by a niece, Billie Lee Darby Martin of Silver Spring; and a nephew, William LeRoy Darby III of Odenton. She is also survived by three great-nephews; and one great-niece. She was predeceased by a brother, William LeRoy Darby Jr.

Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, 610 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg.

Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Cross Home Care and Hospice, 11800 Tech Road, No. 240, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
