CURRIE, George Donald - Age 83, passed away peacefully at his home in his beloved city of San Francisco on March 28, 2002. During the 1950s and 60s he was a well-known bon vivant in North Beach, with various positions including running the original kitchen at the Old Spaghetti Factory with its founder Fred Kuh. He also was a manager at the Purple Onion, helping with the early careers of talents such as Maya Angelou and Phyllis Diller. He later managed the jazz and blues club Sugar Hill on Broadway. Don was born November 19, 1918 in Newark, Ohio and grew up to be a fighting ace in World War II. He survived Pearl Harbor and went on to fly 23 missions in a P-51 Mustang with the 8th Air Force in Europe. His plane was shot down and he spent a year as a prisoner of war. After the war he spent three years in France and managed a nightclub in Paris. Donald passionately loved food, wine, dogs, books and all of the arts. He is now with all of his old friends, especially Majorie Brush, Fred Kuh, Jo Landor and Michael Roberts. In accordance with Donald's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. Donations may be made to a local SPCA. Arrangements by the Neptune Society San Francisco.

I sublet a room from him for a few years just prior to his death. He was a nice man.
