Henry Clay Coffey was a Sergeant in Co. F of the 26th NC Infantry and was part of the July 1, 1863 afternoon attack at Gettysburg's McPherson's ridge where he was wounded and captured. He was released later that year in a prisoner exchange. He married on Jan 28, 1864 to Sephronia Tate Coffey the daughter of Daniel Boone Coffey and Clarissa Estes shortly after the exchange when he returned home. In about one more month he had left to rejoin Lee's army then north of Richmond by March, 1864.

After the war he maintained his farm about 2 miles east of Colletsville, NC. Also owned land near Blowing Rock that he later sold to Moses H Cone. He then contracted for and built the Bass Lake on that land for Moses Cone. That lake is still extant on the Cone Mansion Blue Ridge Parkway facility.

Buried in a private cemetery near Colletsville, NC. Directions - Highway 90 from Collettsville to Glass Road Intersection, turn right into a private drive, cross Mulberry Creek, take road to left through pasture to pond. Follow road by pond and old house place to end of road and cemetery.
