James was a farmer, he owned and operated a cotton gin, a grist mill, a saw mill, and a blacksmith shop and in the summer a cider pres. He grew sheep for wool.
He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Methodist Church. He was a trustee when the church was established in 1880.

James was a private in the Alabama 50th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, Company D. He ranked out as Corporal.
He was captured in Chickamaga, Tennessee. He was sent to Huntsville, Alabama, where he stayed a prisoner until the war was over. Periodically he and two other prisoners and a guard would take their wagons to Decatur, Alabama, to get salt for the animals and prisoners. When he was set free he walked from Huntsville to within three miles of Susan Moore. He met a friend riding a mule who insisted he ride his mule the remaining three miles home.
