Joyce was born to Lee and Anna (Ranschau) Hass at Hawarden, Iowa. She grew up on the Hass family farm and was a member of the third generation of Hasses to reside on that farm. On April 19, 1949, Joyce married Melvin Janssen at South Sioux City, Nebraska. Afterwards, she and her husband resided in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Joyce passed away after a year-long illness. She was survived by her mother, her husband, six children, two grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, and her maternal grandmother. She was preceded in death by her father and three grandparents.
