Melvin grew up on the family farm near Ireton, Iowa. He was educated at Hawarden High School. On April 19, 1949, Melvin married Joyce Hass at South Sioux City, Nebraska. He spent two years working on the Clarence Heuer farm before he and his wife started farming near Doon, Iowa in 1952.
In 1972, Melvin lost his wife to cancer. After becoming severely disabled by an aneurism in 1990, Melvin spent the last decade of his life in a nursing home. Melvin resided at Morningside Manor in Alcester, SD before moving to Valley Manor in Rock Valley, IA in 1994.
