Mary Ann was the daughter of James and Anna (Farley) Maher. At age five, she moved with her parents to Union County, Dakota Territory and grew up five miles southeast of the present site of Beresford, SD. She met her husband, Theadore in 1889. She and her husband lived in Sioux City, IA for a time before moving to Waterloo, IA.
