LeRoy T. "Buck" Fitchett, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, died Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Fitchett will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present.

LeRoy Thomas Fitchett was born on December 16, 1917 to Orson and Mary (Johnson) Fitchett in Coon Township in Buena Vista County, Iowa. He lived with his family on their farm outside Newell, where he attended country school and Sulphur Springs School. LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Newell. He remained a lifelong and faithful member of the Newell United Methodist Church and served on the church council. LeRoy was also an active member of the Newell Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge in Newell for 60 years. He was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau for many years.

On December 28, 1938, LeRoy was united in marriage to Elnora Marie Just at the Methodist Parsonage in Storm Lake. Their union was blessed with two children: Beverly Kay and Barbara Mae. They made their home on a farm southeast of Newell.

LeRoy was a life-long farmer and enjoyed raising horses, cattle, and hogs. He retired from farming in 1990. For many years, he made an annual trip to Clay County Fair just to watch the horse shows. LeRoy and his wife Elnora had a catering business for 20 years and also ran the E & L Café in Newell for eight years. They enjoyed attending dances featuring the music of the Big Band Era.

LeRoy enjoyed the many visits by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would regularly tell stories of his many escapades during his younger years and while working as a hired man.

LeRoy is survived by his two daughters: Beverly Morris of Milford and Barbara Helman of Laurel, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Don Wise of Sioux City, Iowa; Linda (David) Nase of Milford, Iowa; Nancy (Jason) Peterson of Sutherland, Iowa; Brian (Ann) Wise of Newell; Jennifer (Dick) Bennett of Rembrandt, Alicia (Matthew) McDaneld of El Dorado, Kansas, Sherry (Jason) Langschwager of Wayne, Nebraska; Penny (Keith) Elder of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Rachel (Eddie) Villicana of Ocala, Florida; and Sarah (Wesley) Purvis of Duluth, Minnesota; 20 great-grandchildren: Jacob, Andrew, Daniel, and Heather Nase, Christopher Wise, Aaron Jansen, Cole and Corinne Wise, Paige and Marlayna Bennett, Emmaline, Dominic, Alexander, and Geneva McDaneld, Samantha and Zaylor Langschwager, Luke, Dawson, and Hunter Elder, and Dana Purvis; three sisters: Fern Crowley of Storm Lake; Joyce Robbins of Alta, Iowa; and Pearl Marlatt of Newell; as well as many other family members and a host of friends.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Elnora; parents, Orson and Mary Fitchett; four grandchildren: Diane Wise, Julie Wise, Luke Helman, and Angela Helman; one son-in-law: David Helman; three sisters: Doris Waterman, Ruth Arends, and Jean Banks; one brother: Ivan Fitchett; one sister-in-law: Charlotte Fitchett; and six brothers-in-law: Walt Waterman, Vernon Arends, John Marlatt, Floyd Banks, Glen Crowley, and Don Robbins.
