Major League Baseball Executive. As general manager of the Boston Red Sox (1984 to 1993), he played a significant role in assembling the 1986 team which captured the American League Pennant. Born James Gerald Gorman, he graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1947 and studied Liberal Arts at Stonehill College (where he excelled playing baseball and basketball), before furthering his education at Bridgewater Teachers College (now Bridgewater State College) from where he attained his master's degree in Education. He served eight years with the US Navy (which included two tours during the Korean War), and initiated his career in baseball within the San Francisco Giants' organization in 1961. This was followed with positions in the front office of the Pittsburgh Pirates' (1962 to 1963), Baltimore Orioles' (1964 to 1967) and Kansas City Royals' (1969 to 1976) organizations (the latter where he served as director of player development). With the Royals, Gorman helped draft star players George Brett and Steve Busby. He had the distinction of serving as the first general manager of the Seattle Mariners' franchise (1977 to 1980) and was assistant general manager with the New York Mets (1981 to 1984). The Red Sox and Mets faced each other in the memorable 1986 Fall Classic (that featured Bill Buckner's costly error in game six), resulting in New York clinching the series in seven games. Ironically, Gorman had a hand in building both teams. He remained with Boston to serve as assistant general manager from 1994 to 1996.
