Wesley L. Johnson, 84, of Sycamore, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Born Oct. 27, 1926, in Sycamore, the son of Peter and Marie (Paulsen) Johnson, he married Bernice Moore on Oct. 18, 1952, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore.
At the age of 17, Wesley enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He graduated from Sycamore schools and Northern Illinois Teachers College in DeKalb with a degree in Industrial Arts and Physical Education. He played football and basketball in high school, and was a life-time season ticket holder at NIU.
Wesley was a mason for local contractors and worked with his brother at the Frank Johnson Construction Company for many years. He also worked as a mason at NIU, where he retired after several years of service.
Wesley loved to golf, and was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church of Sycamore, Sycamore VFW Post 5768, Sycamore Elks Club 1392, Sycamore Moose Lodge 1506 and Bricklayers Union Local 21, serving as the recording secretary for many years.
He is survived by three sons, Roger (Gayle) Braffett of Sycamore, Murph (Sherry) Johnson of Sycamore and Kent (Lori Hill) Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Lynn (Steve) Bear of Denver, Colo., Mark Braffett of DeKalb, Christian (Val) Freeman of Lakewood, Layla (Ryan) Bomstad of Plainfield and Keegan Johnson of Sycamore; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Pete (Char) Johnson of DeKalb and Frank (Nadine) Johnson of Astaro, Fla.; and three nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2008; and one sister in infancy.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 4 at the Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at the local family-owned and -operated Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore and from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the church.
