George Reginald Starr - he was born in London and educated at Ardingly College. He later studied mining engineering at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London.
In 1940 Starr was working in Liege, Belgium- when the German invasion began. He escaped to England and joined the British Army being commissioned on the general list. He was later recruited into the French Section of the Special Operations Executive, because of his language skills. His brother John Renshaw Starr was also a member of S.O.E.
After training Starr was sent to France in November 1942 and he was based at Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon. He started to build the Wheelwright Network. Which was to be one of the most effective networks of S.O.E. and George Starr would be one of S.O.E's most successful agents.
The Wheelwright Network gave detailed situation reports on the German 11th Tank Division, Nr Bordeaux. The network also cut telephone and power lines and sabotaged power stations.
Starr also managed to link up to the French Communist groups and organise sabotage operations which were carried out jointly against the Germans.
One of Starr's team was S.O.E. agent Denise Bloch.
In 1944 - Starr created an armed group called the 'Armagnac Battalion' in Toulouse. During the D-Day Landings...Starr's group destroyed communications and transportation lines, which caused severe delay to the SS Panzer Division, Das Reich. This delay caused this panzer division to arrive too late to stop the Allied landing forces.
During the Liberation - Starr's group took control of the Toulouse area. When Charles de Gaulle visited the region, he got into a spirited argument with Starr...and threatened to have him put in prison.
He then changed his mind - to everyone's relief and shook Starr's hand.
