Actor. He gained fame as an American character actor in the 20th century. He appeared in over 200 films besides television roles. He was a 1936 Academy Award recipient for the role of Henry in the short film "Give Me Liberty." Born John Beach Litel, he appeared in early television series including 30 episodes of a reoccurring role of Mr. Thackery in "My Hero" from 1952 to 1953, nine episodes in "Stagecoach West" from 1960 to 1961 and eight episodes of "Zorro" in 1957. He had the role of Vice-Admiral Crawford in the 1961 film "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," and he had the role of the doctor in "Nevada Smith" in 1966. He became ill in 1967 and retired. During World War I, he enlisted in the French Army not wanting to wait until the United States joined the war. After the war, he enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, toured with various stage companies, and made his film debut in 1929. In the 1930s, he was one of what was called the "Warner Bros. Stock Company."
