Mrs. Addie Mae Howard Crayton,79, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, June 8, 2000, at her home.

She was born March 20, 1921 in Oakboro in Stanly County, NC, to the late Adam Alec and Veta Mae Foreman Howard. After being orphaned as a baby, Mrs. Crayton lived with her grandmother, Molly Martin Foreman until the age of 11, after which she lived with her aunt and uncle, Jerome and Lily Foreman and their four children.

Following graduation from Oakboro High School in 1938, Mrs. Crayton graduated from Appalachian State University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After graduation she taught in Stanfield and Endy, NC.

On July 15, 1944, Mrs. Crayton married her high school sweetheart, Bill Crayton, and moved to Washington, DC. Upon her later return to North Carolina, she taught in Albemarle, until in 1947, when she began her teaching career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, first at Derita School, then at Chantilly Elementary School.

Mrs. Crayton was one of the first Gifted Program (SAT) teachers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg System, teaching these students at Myers Park Elementary School. She retired in 1976, following a 33-year career in education.

A member of Oakhurst Baptist Church, Mrs. Crayton had been ill for years, but always had a smile on her face and a wonderful attitude about life. She was an inspiration to everyone with whom she came into contact and touched countless lives.

Mrs. Crayton is survived by her loving husband of almost 56 years, Billie Linwood Crayton; one daughter, Mary Anne Cordell and her husband Elliott, of Monroe, NC; three grandchildren, Holly Anne Bartlett and her husband, Matt, Megan Anne Parmer and her husband, Matt, and Jacob Elliott Cordell, all of Monroe; one great-granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Bartlett of Monroe; one sister, Wilma Funderburk of Albemarle; special friends, Scott and Teresa Broome of Monroe and Phyllis and Don Broome of Charlotte; and numerous loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service is 2 pm Saturday, June 10, at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Wilson Chapel, 5301 Albemarle Road, with Reverend Bill B. Wright of Oakhurst Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilson Chapel.

Serving as pallbearers are nephews, Eddie Funerburk, Foreman Rushing, Wayne Beachum and Gary, Doug and Chris Foreman.
