An American patriot and veteran of the Revolutionary War, John Dod served in both the 2nd Essex Regiment and with Captain Craig's New Jersey State troops. Described as the "Consort of Jane Dod", he died "in his 69th year".
Born in the section of present day Orange, NJ known as "Dod Town" during the colonial era, he was the eldest son of John Dod and the former Rebecca Lampson. His wife, Jane, was daughter of Joseph Smith. In 1754 he was chosen assessor of the city of Newark, a significant and wide-ranging responsibility. His name is listed on the D.A.R. memorial honoring veterans of the Revolutionary War who are buried in this churchyard.
