Arnold Rasmussen, age 83, of Newell, died Friday, April 27, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Arnold Nels Rasmussen was born on May 7, 1923, in rural Newell, Iowa, the son of Axel and Anna (Svendsen) Rasmussen. He received his education and graduated from Nemaha High School. Following graduation, Arnold attended Iowa State University for one year and Buena Vista College for two years.

Arnold was an active, lifelong member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. He was baptized and confirmed, as well as served on the church council and as church council president.

From July 23, 1943 to January 19, 1946, Arnold proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force. He served in World War II, attained the rank of Sergeant and was a Gunnery Instructor for B17 and B29 bombers.

On November 24, 1946, Arnold was united in marriage to Ellen Arlene Lund at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. This union was blessed with five children: Teresa, Marsha, Rodney, Lisa and Layne. They raised their children in the Newell area where Arnold farmed and later sold insurance, retiring in 1993.

Arnold was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Newell American Legion Post 193; Newell Park Board; Danish Brotherhood State Vice President; Meals on Wheels; Newell Senior Citizens; Men's Golf; German Mutual Insurance Agency Board member; and Newell Chamber. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed woodworking, operating the combine after retiring, singing in church choir, playing cards and listening to 40's and 50's music. His family brought him much enjoyment and pride over the years, as he delighted in the times they spent together. He cherished the times he attended his children's and grandchildren's many sporting events and school programs.

Those left to cherish Arnold's memory include his wife of over 60 years, Ellen Rasmussen of Newell; his children: Teresa Haburn and her husband Paul of Fort Worth, Texas, Marsha Sedlacek and her husband Joel of Omaha, Nebraska, Rodney Rasmussen and his wife Laurie of Newell, Lisa Kempfert and her husband Elwyn of Aurelia, Iowa and Layne Rasmussen and his wife Peggy of Johnston, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Courtney Clayton and her husband Patrick of Fort Worth; Dak Rasmussen and his wife Dr. Leigh Rasmussen of Pella, Iowa; Dr. Leigh Meyer and her husband Dr. Brent Meyer of Galva, Iowa; Aaron Sedlacek and his wife Chantelle of Omaha; Keith Sedlacek of Kansas City, Kansas; Brad Kempfert of Sioux City, Iowa; Brian Kempfert of Aurelia; Erik Rasmussen of Johnston; Anna Rasmussen of Johnston; and Jens Rasmussen of Johnston; ten great-grandchildren: Dalton, Ethan and Gavin Sedlacek, Carson and Cashden Clayton, Will and Nora Rasmussen, Garrett, Caden and April Rasmussen; sister-in-law, Jane Rasmussen; brothers and sisters-in-law: Leon and Ruby Haahr, Mel and Agnes Grundmeier, Norman and JoAn Lund; several nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
