Actress, Singer. Called "Norway's Diva", she was a leading star of the Norwegian stage and screen for more than 70 years. Born Eva Wenche Steenfeldt-Foss to a middle class family she made her 1935 professional debut in Vilhelm Dybwad's operetta "Taterblod" and thru the late 1930s was a company member at the Carl Johan Theater. Foss made her silver screen bow in the 1940 comedy "Torres Snortevold" and was to be seen in about 15 more film features including the 1970 "Song of Norway" which told the story of composer Edvard Grieg. An accomplished mezzo soprano she sang in numerous operettas including Franz Lehar's "The Count of Luxemburg" and "The Merry Widow" as well as in such musicals as "Cabaret", "Kiss Me Kate", and "Hello Dolly". A main part of the National Theatre and of the Oslo Nye Theatre she starred in countless productions of works both modern and classic; though her last big screen turn came in 1974's "Bar Borson, Jr." she was seen on television as late as 2006 and even did some voice-overs and at least one video game. Her honours were many including Knight of the Order of Danneborg and designation in 1972 as Commander Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav with a Star added in 1988. In 2007 Queen Sonja unveiled a statue of Foss at the National Theatre. Over the years she worked to raise awareness of a number of issues including Down's Syndrome, to which she had lost a child in the early 1950s, and breast cancer with which she was diagnosed in 1971. She died following a protracted illness.
