Russell was the youngest of seven, the son of John's second wife. He had blond curls as a youngster, inherited from his paternal grandfather, and evidently was quite spoiled by his mother and four older sisters. Sadly his father died when Russell was only two.

He attended the Stanstead Wesleyan College High School in Quebec, then worked as a clerk in Montreal before adding a year to his age in 1914 and enlisting in the 5th Regiment Royal Highlanders of Canada.

After WWI he was a clerk in Winnipeg before moving to Detroit about 1920 to work in the auto industry. He was naturalized in 1941 and lived almost 40 more years in Michigan.

In 1925 he married Annie Duncan from Scotland and ten years later their son Douglas was born.
