The memorial service for Alphia B. Riehl, 94, of Stewartville, will be at 11 a.m. next Friday, April 8, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville, with Rev. Byron Meline and Rev. Emily Carson co-officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery in Grand Meadow.

Mrs. Riehl died Saturday, March 26, 2011, of natural causes, at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since 2009.

Alphia Bernice Anderson was born April 23, 1916, in rural Adams, to Oscar and Rachel (Underdahl) Anderson. She attended grade school and graduated from Adams High School. She worked as a housekeeper in Austin for several years. On Feb. 8, 1942, she married George Riehl.

They farmed in the Elkton area for five years before moving to Longview, Wash. They moved to Stewartville in 1962 where Mr. Riehl was employed at the Stewartville Public Works Department for 20 years. Mrs. Riehl was employed as a clerical worker at Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 24 years. Following their retirement Alphia and George spent their winters in Texas. Mr. Riehl passed away on July 25, 1999.

Alphia was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville and was active in its Ladies Circles and quilting projects. She was a member of the Stewartville Senior Citizens and was always willing to give her lady friends car rides. She enjoyed traveling, including a European cruise and a trip to visit friends in New Zealand in 2003. She also enjoyed quilting, gardening and time spent with friends.

Survivors include her sister, Ruth Swenson of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; and a sister, Elvira DeVries.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday morning next week, April 8.

Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
