Nelda Kathryn Cason Drinkwater, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 29, 2011, at Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Maryland,with her daughter by her side.
A native of Waycross, Ga. and was the third daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Cason and Fredda Harbin Cason's eight children.
Preceding her in death were her sisters Miss Keren Elfrieda Cason and Mrs.Doris Luella Cason Williams, her brother Mr. Joseph Benjamin Cason Jr, and her sister Mrs. Lois Frances Cason Butler.
Left to carry on by her siblings: Mrs. Fredda Montine Cason Drupiewski (Kenn), of Winter Park, FL; Mr. Richard Keith Cason (Irene), of Lutz, FL; and Mrs. Carol Jean Cason Farr (George), of Waycross.
She is also survived by her daughter, Mrs. Julia Kathryn Drinkwater Sloan, and son-in-law, Mr. Stephen Leonard Sloan, of Gaithersburg, MD; her grandson Mr. Michael David Sloan, of Waycross; her grandson Mr. Trevor Andrew Sloan, his wife, Mrs. Christina Lynn Arsenault Sloan, and two great-grandsons, Aiden Charles Sloan (age 7) and Liam Alan Sloan (age 3), of Rockville, MD; and her grandson Mr. Forrest Bradley Sloan and his wife, Mrs. Amanda Danielle Hall Sloan, of Waycross and a sister-in-law, Hazel R. Cason, of Waycross.
Nelda went through public school in her hometown, attending Isabella Street Grammar School, and Waycross Junior and Senior High, graduating in the Class of 1930. She went on to attend Wesleyan Conservatory and School of Fine Arts in Macon, GA, where she studied piano from Professor Joseph A. Maerz and played first-chair violin in the Macon Symphony Orchestra. Returning to Waycross in 1935, she taught piano and violin at the Ware Conservatory under the direction of Miss Nora Lee Smith and Isabella Smith, and served as pianist and organist for Central Baptist Church.
Nelda also worked for her father in his AB&A (Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic) Railway office as well as in his own business, Cason Feed Seed & Fertilizer, and she taught as a substitute at the Wacona School. In addition, she was a loyal member of several local community service organizations, including the Women's Benefit Association and the Pilot Club,for many years.
During World War II, Nelda proudly served her country as one of the first female U.S. Marines. She attended boot camp at Camp Lejeune, NC, and was stationed at Henderson Hall, near Washington, DC, where she worked in the Transportation and Engineering departments.
Following the War, she returned to Waycross, where she met the greatest love of her life, Mr. Charles Newton Drinkwater. The couple married in Waycross on May 21, 1947, and settled in Silver Spring, MD, a suburb of Washington,DC, where Charles worked for the U.S. Department of State. Nelda taught private piano lessons in their home while she and Charles raised their daughter. When the couple retired in 1978, they returned "home" to Waycross, where they enjoyed rekindling precious friendships and she served as president of the Waycross Music Club for a number of years.
She became widowed when Charles passed away on July 3, 1997, and shortly afterward her widowed sister Frances came to share her home on Linden Drive. The two sisters were blessed by each other's company for ten wonderful years. Nelda's love of music kept her actively involved, and she taught violin pupils until age 95, when she returned to Maryland to live with her daughter in Gaithersburg, in March 2008. There, in the loving embrace of family and friends, Nelda enjoyed her final years reminiscing and writing her memoirs. Surrounded by lively chatter and the patter of her great-grandsons' little feet, she often remarked that she was the happiest that anyone could possibly be. Nelda brightened every life she ever touched, and she touched many. She genuinely loved everybody. Talented pianist and violinist, nurturing teacher, imaginative storyteller, and fun-loving friend, she filled each day with music, laughter, and love. Hers was truly a wondrous life, because she made it so. She loved to share her adventures, both great and small, and her light shines on in the hearts of her beloved friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Central Baptist Church, 201 Ava Street, in Waycross, and burial will follow at Lott Cemetery, at the corner of Tebeau and Quarterman streets, in Waycross.
Family will receive friends from 2-3 Saturday in the chapel of Central Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, Nelda's family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Joe and Fredda Cason Scholarship Fund, Waycross College, 2001 South Georgia Parkway, Waycross, GA 31503.
