He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post No. 1990.

Survivors include his wife: Dorothy C. Mattingly, born in Illinois on 8-10-1929; three sons and daughters-in-law: Wayne and Kathy Bullen of Unicoi County, and Michael and Glenda Bullen and Tom and Paula Bullen, all of Greene County; five daughters and three sons-in-law: Pat Bowers of Greeneville, Phyllis and Bill Brown and Karen and Chris Myers, all of Greene County, Rosie and Al Campbell of Waynesboro, Va., and Mary Atchley of Morristown; his grandchildren: Carl Bullen, Sarah Bullen, Forrest Bullen, Bryan Bowers, Chris Bowers, J.D. Bowers, Stacy Jobe, Greg Rollins, Lora Dickerson, Megan Campbell, Darcy Campbell, Kimmy Campbell, Caroline Campbell, Jon Bullen, Jason Bullen, Lindsay Johnson, Adam Myers, Katie Myers, Sidney Atchley, Patrick Atchley, Emily Bullen, and Abby Bullen; and a special niece and a special nephew: Katherine Pinkston and Allen Woods, both of Greene County.

He was a son of the late Carl and Katherine Rupert Bullen and was preceded in death by a son: Mark Bullen; and a sister: Billie Ruth Woods.
