Jack Finlayson, moved to Petoskey in 1961 when Jack took the position of General Manager of what was then known as the Perry Davis Hotel. In the late 60's, his wife Connie, in partnership with her husband and friends, owned and operated a shop in the Gaslight District called "Three Twenty-Nine Bay St., Inc." which was popular for its gifts and decorative accessories.

At the Phoenix Hotel, where Jack worked, he met and married his wife Connie on October 22, 1946. Through the late 1940's and 50's, Jack worked in the hotel business in Lexington and Dayton, Ohio. In 1950, he and his wife moved to Michigan for the first time, settling in Marshall, home of Jack's new restaurant management position with the well-known Win Schuler's Restaurants.

The family moved to the Petoskey area in 1960 when Jack went to work for Jack Davis, then owner of the Colonial Inn in Harbor Springs. Months later, Mr. Davis purchased the Perry Hotel in Petoskey, and brought in Jack to open and operate the new hotel, now named the Perry-Davis Hotel.

They lived in Petoskey, at the hotel, from 1961 until 1973. Connie helped her husband with social activities and decorating at the hotel and, for a number of years, operated her retail store in the Gaslight District. They returned to Marshall in 1973 when Jack returned to work for Win Schuler's Restaurants.

In 1979, he and his wife opened their own restaurant, The Paw Paw Tree, in Coloma, Michigan, which they operated for a number of years. He returned to Petoskey to retire in 1987 but kept busy in the food business, both he and his wife working for long-time friends, Leonard and Sophie Carpenter, at Bluff Gardens in Harbor Springs.
