Shirley M. Homick, a resident of Peckville for the last 55 years, died Friday at the VNA Hospice Unit of Community Medical Center. She was the wife of Michael Homick for 55 years. Born July 24, 1932, in Binghamton, NY, she was the daughter of William and Florence Nicol Blackwell.
She was a member of the Peckville United Methodist Church. She was raised in Ransom Township and graduated in 1950 from Newton Ransom High School, where she was a member of the girl's basketball team. She was an avid bowler. Prior to her illness, she bowled with the Early Bird League and the Mixed Senior Citizens League at idle Hour Lanes. For many years she served as secretary/treasurer of the Early Bird League. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Peckville VFW Shopa Davey Post 6082; the Wilson Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a member and officer of the Lincoln Elementary School PTA in Peckville.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was very devoted to her husband and family, especially her grandchildren, and put her life in God's hands always. She was an avid reader and was a faithful supporter of the Valley Community Library in Peckville. She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed making quilts for her family.
Also surviving are three daughters; Linda [Paul] Kupchick, Jackson Township, Susquehanna County, Michele [Jay] Dembesky, Dickson City and Susan [Leonard] Turissini, Mondale; five grandchildren; Michael Kupchick, Allentown; Katie and Jimmy Dembesky, Dickson City; John and Christina Turissini, Mondale; a sister Jane O'Hearn, Scranton and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a beloved granddaughter, Jill Kupchick and a brother William Blackwell.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Peckville United Methodist Church, Main Street, Peckville. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Community Library, River Street, Peckville or the VNA Hospice of CMC, Mulberry St.
