Edward Calvin Winebrinner, better known as Blackie, was born December 15, 1926 to George Winebrinner and Eva May (Brott) Winebrinner at Bedford, Iowa. His parents moved to Fonda, Iowa, where he grew up. As a youth he went to live with Ray Longnecker, a farmer living south of Fonda.

In September of 1950, he was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in rural Sac City, Iowa.

Blackie was united in marriage to Ruth Hardyk at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on October 6, 1950. Their union was blessed with six children: Donald, Dennis, Susan, Michael, Martin and John.

After serving two years in the Army, Blackie farmed for two years, then moved his family to Newell. While living there, he worked for the City of Newell, Buena Vista County and Wilson Foods in Cherokee, Iowa. In 1961, Blackie joined Alcoholics Anonymous, and has been active in the fellowship since then.

When Blackie retired from the City of Newell in 1989, he and Ruth built a summer cabin at Spirit Lake, where they enjoyed the summers. In 2002 they sold that place, and have spent their time since at their home in Newell.

Blackie enjoyed hunting and fishing. In later years, he discovered he enjoyed growing flowers. He made his home beautiful with this love of flowers.

Blackie was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: Donald and wife Darlys, Dennis and wife Debbie, Susan and husband Marlow Scheffer, Michael and wife Joan, Martin and wife Pam, and John and wife Joy. Blackie is further survived by his grandchildren: Jill and husband Jamie Tuttle; Eric, Travis, Shaun, Kayla, Todd, Brandie, Joshua and Caleb; as well as extended family and a host of friends.
