David E. Beck passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 6, 2006, while playing tennis, a game he dearly loved.
Mr. Beck was born May 30, 1945, Memorial Day, in Moscow, Idaho, the sixth of eight children born to Jay Vern and Fay Ellison Beck. In 1983 he married Necka Jean Pinotti, the love of his life, and they were sealed in the Jordan River Temple in 1990. His early childhood years were spent in Moscow, Idaho and State College, Pennsylvania, after which the family settled in Provo, Utah. He attended seventh grade in Sheffield, England, where his father served a sabbatical from his professorship at Brigham Young University. As a youngster he excelled in French horn and tennis. He graduated from Brigham Young High School, and studied chemical engineering at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. He was a chemical engineer with DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware and twelve years in Brazil. He then returned to the United States and at the time of his passing was Chief Executive Officer of CycleSolv of Wilmington, Delaware. He was an avid tennis player and a member of the DuPont Country Club. He recently won the U.S. Tennis Association Senior League Championship. His life was marked by kindness and service to others, especially those who struggled. He enlisted in the National Guard where he served as a cook. A devoted and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Beck served as a missionary in the Brazilian South Mission between 1964 and 1966, where he gained a lifelong love of the Brazilian people whom he returned often to visit. He has served as Elders Quorum President, High Councilor, Bishop's counselor, and was in his fifth year as Bishop of the Christiana Ward at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, Necka; father, Jay V. Beck (Pleasant Grove, UT); sisters, Dorthene Richardson (Orem, UT), Lynn McEwan (Cedar Hills, UT), Jackie Foutz (Paradise Valley, AZ), Bonnie Studdert (Alpine, UT); brother, John Beck (Phoenix, AZ); and by nieces and nephews who love their "Uncle David."
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 11, 2006, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 500 West Chestnut Hill Road, in Newark, Delaware. Burial will be in the Alpine Utah Cemetery.
