Nellie Ann Page was the daughter of Reed Page (1860 - 1934) and Mary Lucinda Mead (1848 - 1924) from Elsie, Duplain Twp., Clinton County, Michigan. She was the mother of our dad (living) and Dorothy Lucille Sheldon who died at her birth (1922). She is remembered for her spiritual devotion, her compassion toward her grandchildren (photograph), and slippers she would knit for us and dolls she would make every year.

Nellie lived the majority of her early years into adulthood very near the small town of Elsie, Michigan. She quietly passed away in Mesa, Arizona, in 1973 under her then married name "Nolan" after suffering from a stroke a year earlier. In both her early and later years, she was particularly close to her nieces who were also her cousins (explained below), Rosa, Blanche, Maude, Bertha, and Mary Page, and to her brother, Reedie (see photo of Reedie, Nellie & Bertha).

Over the early years of the 20th century, a number of the members of her Michigan Page family succumbed to tuberculosis. In addition, she outlived four husbands who were (1) Earl Munson (pictured), (2) Vernon Burr Sheldon (Bosworth Cemetery, Walton Township, Eaton County, Olivet, Michigan), (3) Raymond Begel (Riverside Cemetery, Elsie), and (4) James Nolan (South Lawn Cemetery, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona).

She and and our grandfather Vernon Burr Sheldon (1890 - 1927) were married on June 3, 1919. At the time of their marriage, Vernon had two children by his previous marriage to Mary Elizabeth Sloan, John David and Ruth Eileen. (Wedding photograph, circa 1919). Vernon passed away in Valparaiso, Indiana, after becoming ill while working as a switch-man for the Grand Trunk Railroad.

She then remarried to Raymond Begel from Michigan in about 1928, (Ray, Nellie, and Jack, about 5, are pictured). When Ray came down with tuberculosis, they moved to Tucson, Arizona. He died in 1948, however, from multiple melinoma and Nellie moved with his remains back to Michigan. Even though Nellie's name is displayed on Ray's headstone in Riverside Cemetery, she lived yet another 25 years...

Their Tucson landlord, James Nolan, soon visited Nellie in Michigan and offerd a proposal for marriage. After their wedding on July 31, 1954 they moved back to Tucson where James Nolan lived the remainder of his life until passing on November 5, 1963 (interred South Lawn Cemetery, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona).

Over the course of the late 1950's and through the 1960's her son and family visited her via passenger train and automobile. In 1971, they moved from their home in Owosso, Michigan to Mesa, Arizona to be closer to her and to care for her in her later years.

Nellie is pictured in her later years (circa 1963) with her stepson, John David Sheldon (1910 - 2002) and his wife, Madeleine Norris (1916 - 2003), who are both interred in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan. Included in this same photograh is her cousin and niece Maude May (Page) Jeffrey (1894 - 1968), who is interred in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Another photo shows Nellie and her son as an infant and another with her son and her first granddaughter after church one Sunday.

One of our family's favorite photographs shows Nellie as an infant at the age of four with her family. Her father Reed (seated) was the son of George Washington Page (1823 - 1901) and Jane (Sherman) Page (1828 - 1917), and mother Mary Lucinda Mead was the daughter of Israel and Clarissa (Austin) Mead. This family has been particularly interesting to research, since Nellie's mother Mary had two sons by a previous marriage to Reed's eldest brother, Sherman Page (1846 - 1879), thus, her nieces were also her cousins. In this family photograph, Frank is standing, left, next to his brother John. Nellie had three full-brothers, Avelyn (1879 - 1957), Reedie (1882 - ), and Willis (1888 - 1889, not pictured).

Avelyn and Reedie are both interred in the Elsie Village Cemetery, while John and Frank and families, and Reed and Mary are interred in the Elsie Riverside Cemetery overlooking the Maple River.
