He enlisted in April 1861 at Sandersville, Georgia and served as a private in Company A, 4th Regiment, Dole's Brigade, Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was shot in the right elbow by a mini ball in the battle on July 2, 1863. He surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on April 9, 1865 as part of Robert E. Lee's Army.
