María Josefa Amésquita y Gaona was the daughter of soldado Juan Antonio Amésquita (1739-1818) and María Juana Gaona (1740-1777). She accompanied her family from Tubac, Sonora (now Arizona), to Alta California with Anza in 1776. She married Hermenegildo Sal at the San Francisco Presidio Chapel on May 16, 1777 (SFD Marriage ...). She died at Monterey and was buried inside the sanctuary of Mission San Carlos (Carmel) on January 25, 1798 (SC Death 01233a).
