Donald K Haahr, 84, of Brownsville, Texas and formerly of Newell, Iowa, passed away October 11, 2006 at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas.

A memorial service for Mr. Haahr is scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Don was born in Newell on July 15, 1922 to Vernon and Anna Haahr. After graduating from Newell High School, he joined the Navy as a radio and radar specialist and for 4 1/2 years served his country during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from the service he married Betty Johnson, also a Newell native.

Don worked as an engineer at a number of radio and TV stations around the country, including Washington DC, Detroit and Cody, Wyoming. In the early 1950s, he and Betty returned to Iowa and settled in Ames where they adopted a son, Jon. In 1959, Don moved his family to Cedar Rapids, where he spent the rest of his career working for Collins Radio/Rockwell International as an electrical and design engineer.

In 1973, Betty passed away from cancer and two years later Don married Jessie Romp. He retired from Rockwell International in 1979 and moved with Jessie to Brownsville, Texas to retire. Don remained active in many circles in Brownsville. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Full Gospel Men's Group.

He leaves his wife Jessie, son Jon and daughter-in-law Terry, stepdaughter Marilyn, his brother Leon and sister-in-law Ruby Haahr, and sister Verla and brother-in-law Bill Reading, as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Don will be missed by his family and friends.
